One of the most irritating things about owning a cell phone is having it locked to a network. Even when your contract runs its course, you can’t leave unless you want to buy a new phone. Except, that is, if you’re living in Canada>>>>>>> and are on Rogers or Fido.

Rogers and its subsidiary Fido are offering customers an unlocking service for $50. As long as you’re not still on contract and your account is in good standing, you can get your device unlocked for $50 plus taxes. iPhone in Canada reports that they’ll even unlock iPhones for you.

USER RATINGS (18)good

Write a
Review

Web-Browsing and E-Mail
First, a word about the on-screen keyboard, since the lack of a physical keyboard is probably the biggest difference between the iPad and, say, a laptop or a netbook (aside from those missing USB ports). As someone who’s all thumbs when it comes to iPhone’s tiny on-screen keyboard, I wondered if the iPad’s larger keyboard would help me master this touch screen typing thing. In a word: Yes. I’m writing this review on the iPad’s horizontal keyboard, in which the keys are large and nicely spaced. (The vertical keyboard is a little tighter, but still definitely useable.) If it weren’t comfortable, I would have abandoned the iPad for my laptop 1,000 words ago. That said, it would have been less comfortable without Apple’s $39 iPad case, which helped prop the iPad up in my lap to get the screen at an ideal viewing angle. Other solutions for long data- and text-entry sessions include the $69 Keyboard Dock, which props the iPad up and provides a full physical keyboard, or, for iMac owners, the bundled wireless Bluetooth keyboard—which pairs easily and works seamlessly with the iPad. (The Magic Mouse—or any mouse, for that matter—won’t work with the iPad.)

The biggest bummer about the built-in Safari browser is, of course, the lack of support for Flash video. Sites with Flash animation won’t fully load, and Flash-based online video content won’t play—so cuddling up on the sofa with the iPad to watchGlee on Hulu isn’t happening—at least not now. Getting past this means accepting that you can’t have the entire Internet within your reach when you use the iPad.

Fixing the 10 Things that Suck

There is a comprehensive list of iPad problems that will likely be largely fixed with software and might actually show up later on the existing iPad. But they will undoubtedly be addressed by the next version.

Of the list the inability to hover and HTML rendering issues are likely the most annoying and will get addressed first. I’m surprised they didn’t initially do stereo sound given the price of this thing but expect that will be in the next hardware and while it will likely never render Flash, it sure could deal with it a lot better.

The iphone already is exhibiting big problems. Not small issues, big problems. People have signal dropping, screen freezing etc. Apple might be pulling a Microsoft and releasing too early. That is not very inspiring.

Apple launched the iPhone 4 last week to a huge groundswell of demand. But the launch was also plagued by complaints from some customers about poor call reception on the device when they held it in a certain way.

The problems have been a hot topic on the Internet, but it is unclear how many people have been affected. The issue does not seem to have hurt iPhone sales so far. Apple sold 1.7 million new iPhones in the first three days.

A putative class action filed Tuesday in the U.S. District court for the Northern District of California against Apple and AT&T Inc — the iPhone’s exclusive wireless carrier in the United States — includes allegations of fraud by concealment, negligence, intentional misrepresentation and defective design.

We spoke with the team at Intermedia and they told us they fixed it at noon today and they were working through the cue.

Absolutely, untrue. They service thousands of customers who at this point are up-in-arms. They have stifled productivity for so many businesses. As a business continuity program, Intermedia gets an F.

// ]]>Steve Jobs has done it again – it is hard to beat the craze that preceded the release of the Apple iPhone, which seems to have received mixed reviews overall, but the iPad appears to have done it. It releases today and apparently Tinsel Town is all over it. Access Hollywood reports on the support shown by celebs so far:

This week’s episode of ABC’s “Modern Family” centered on Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) geeking out over the new gadget. In related news, ABC, CBS and FOX have all announced that they will provide content for the multimedia device. More networks and cable channels are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

A number of celebs have also been Tweeting about their desire for the hi-tech goodie this week.

“I will not buy an iPad. I will not buy an iPad. I will not buy an iPad. Okay, I’m tempted to get an iPad. Darn you Steve Jobs!” Jordin Sparks Tweeted.

Alyssa Milano even took to Twitter to complain that her iPad pre-order had been cancelled.

“I ordered iPads for me, mom & David,” she Tweeted. “Apple said: ‘we have limited amount available per customer. Therefore, this order has been cancelled.’”

Wow, even celebs are being turned down – talk about the lack of supply creating the crazy demand. Of course, the controversial site, HuffingtonPost.com, plays the devil’s advocate by naming nine reasons NOT to buy the iPad, including things like the lack of multitasking and camera on the device. Although they did point out that Ptech.com’s Walt Mossberg reviewed the iPad and said, “this beautiful new touch-screen device from Apple has the potential to change portable computing profoundly, and to challenge the primacy of the laptop.” Seriously, at this rate, Jobs has got to be working on figuring out a way for us to eventually install a computer right into our noggin.

IPAD More Popular than Iphone

That’s what this RBC/ChangeWave’s surveys says. Back in April 2007, fewer people were interested in buying the original iPhone compared to those wanting to buy the iPad on February 2010. Does this mean the iPad would be a bigger success?

Not necessarily. It may mean that, but we don’t really know for sure. First, back then the iPhone was completely unknown. A new, unproven product, with no user base whatsoever. Today, the iPhone and iPod are well known, so one could even argue that—given their massive popularity—a higher percentage of people would be interested in buying the iPad. In other words, who knows. Let’s wait until Apple actually makes the iPad available on their site.

There are other interesting data points. One is the version people are most interested in: The lowest end and the highest end win, with 19% each. With the 64GB Wi-Fi getting only 8% and the 16GB Wi-Fi and 3G version getting 9% of the interest.

Another interesting one: 68% of the people interested in it want to surf the internet, 44% for email, 37% for eBooks, 28% for the reading magazines and other periodicals, and only 24% for watching video.
